Fallingwater National Historic Landmark

Fallingwater is located in Southwestern Pennsylvania’s Laurel Highlands and is just over an hour from the city of Pittsburgh.  It is famous because it is actually built over a waterfall. America’s most famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright built this house for the Kaufmann family.  If you are from the Pittsburgh area then you are familiar with the Kaufmann family who owned Kaufmann’s Department stores.

This is honestly a must see landmark! Not only is it it beautiful in the Fall but it will take your breath away. Since it is located in the mountains you get an amazing view of all the Fall foliage, and they even offer a sunset tour.

When we visited Fallingwater it was before we had children. They do allow children that are ages 6 and up at Fallingwater and they provide you with a bunch of helpful tips to prepare for your visit to the museum. Make sure you visit their site before planning a trip because it is a museum so they do have restrictions. For example, you are not allowed to take any pictures of the house or surrounding areas or take any large bags into the facility.

Facts about Fallingwater:

  • Final cost:  $155,000
  • Square footage: The main house uses 5,330 square feet.
  • Preservation: The Western Pennsylvania Conservancy has preserved the landmark since 1963, with a major structural repair in 2002 strengthening the cantilevers to prevent collapse and future deflection.
  • It was featured on the cover of Time magazine in 1938 {Find out More}
