Why to Protect Your Eyes While Traveling
Don’t Forget to Protect Your Eyes During Your Next Vacation
You hear all the time about the dangers of UV on your skin but do you know that those rays are also harming your eyes ?
I have always had a sensitivity to light but only recently ,after attending an event sponsored by The Vision Council and hearing information about the dangers of UV to the eyes, did I realize why they were so sensitive. We know to slather on sunscreen but we never think that our eyes need to be protected just as much as our skin.
Why you need to Protect your Eyes from UV Rays.
Short Term Vision Problems: Irritation, Redness, Swelling, Hypersensitivity to Light, and Sunburn of the Eyes
Long Term Vision Problems: Cataracts, Macular Degeneration, Abnormal Growths on the Eye and Eyelid, and Cancer of the Eye, Eyelid and Surrounding Skin.
How to Protect Your Eyes
Limit outdoor time between 10:00 AM and 4 PM- the times when UV radiation is the strongest.
Wear UV Protective sunglasses whenever you step aside, no matter when or where you are.
Don’t count on hats to protect your eyes.
Make sure your sunglasses offer UVA and UVB protection.
Shop for sunglasses at a credible source and if you are unsure have them tested at your local ophthalmologist or optometrist office.
Make sure sunglasses are comfortable as well or they won’t get worn.
Keep your sunglasses protected so the UV coating on the lenses doesn’t get scratched.

Top 5 Tips to Remember
Children need sunglasses more than adults because they have immature lenses.
Not all sunglasses protect your eyes from UV rays even if they are tinted very dark.
Even when it is not sunny or hot you need to protect your eyes.
Sun reflecting off of surfaces (ie. water, snow, dry sand, etc.) can be just as harmful as direct rays.
UV Damage is cumulative and adds up over time.
