2013 National Boy Scout Jamboree
2013 National Boy Scout Jamboree
The Boy Scouts Are Coming! The Boy Scouts Are Coming! Okay, it’s not as historic as “The British are coming” but it IS pretty darn exciting! In just a few days, Boy Scouts from across the country will venture to the mountains of West Virginia to attend the 2013 National Boy Scout Jamboree at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve near Fayetteville. The event begins on July 15th and concludes on July 24th. The National Scout Jamboree occurs every four years and this year the 40,000+ Scouts, Venturers, volunteers and staff from across the country will be the first at the new facility. The Summit, covering 10,600 acres in the New River Gorge area, will be serving as a permanent home for the national jamboree.
This year’s theme is “Go Big. Get Wild.” The Scouts will be participating in adventures on more than six miles of zip lines, 36 miles of mountain bike trails, 13 acres of shooting sports, in addition to kayaking, rock climbing, bouldering, skate boarding, BMX and many other activities which fit into the BSA’s commitment to physical wellness. They will also include exhibits, stadium shows with entertainment, service projects within the nine counties surrounding The Summit and many opportunities to earn merit badges.
The community is welcome to check out the Summit’s 100-acre visitor area, where they can sample some of the adventurous activities.
