Seminole Indian Museum: A Place to Learn

While attending a conference in South Florida in October, I had the opportunity to check out a part of the Big Cypress Seminole Indian Reservation on a guided tour.  It was such an amazing experience and tour!  I cannot wait to return with my husband and son to allow them to learn about the Seminole Indian tribe.  One of the most enlightening and educational stops on the tour was the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Indian Museum.

Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki means “a place to learn, a place to remember”.  Everyone I met at the museum had a passion for being there and knew all about the Seminole Indian culture and traditions.  They also enjoyed answering questions and teaching about the history of the tribe.

With over 30,000 artifacts and archival items, the museum was full of history and education. While visiting the museum, we watched a short movie, learned about the culture through artifacts and life sized figures, and admired artwork.

The museum also includes an elevated boardwalk which is about a mile long and travels through a 66 acre cypress swamp.  I was unable to enjoy the board walk during our visit, but the views travelling to and from the Museum by bus were beautiful.  The boardwalk is wheel chair accessible and provides true views of Florida without theme parks and beaches.

Admission is $10 per person.  The museum is family friendly and is a great place for older kids to learn while on vacation.  More information can be found at the Museum’s website at: http://www.ahtahthiki.com/

It is also important to note that the Ah-Tah-Thi-Ki Seminole Indian Museum is a designated Smithsonian Institution Affiliate.
