The Sandia Peak Tramway extends to the top of Sandia Peak an elevation of 10,500 ft. It is an engineering marvel, but that is not the only reason why it visitors come to visit. Most visitors come to see the spectacular views the as passengers ascend to the summit on a 2.7 mile journey and 15-minute ride to the top.
A little bit of history about the tram leads you to discover it planning and construction were not easy. It took two years for the tram to move from an idea to a construction project. And the tram construction took 24 months with over five months just to lay the cable up the side of the mountain. And once construction was complete the tram went through 60 days of safety testing before taking its first visitors to the top on May 7, 1966. Getting on the tram is only part of the adventure once you arrive at the top there are a number of activates you can take part in and hopefully you brought a jacket, temperatures are a bit chilly at the top. Besides checking out the spectacular view of over 11,000 square miles of the Land of Enchantment (New Mexico) including Albuquerque and the surrounding scenery there is plenty to do. You can dine with exceptional views at the High Finance Restaurant, hike or backpack and in the winter the ski area is on the opposite side of the mountain. When the snow melts the ski trails turn into over 42 miles of mountain biking trails after.
