A fishing vacation is a great way to get away and relax. Fishing requires a quiet and calm atmosphere. While fishing, you will enjoy a break from the electronics you spend your days tethered to. Going fishing does not have to be planned out weeks in advance. Most people live within an hour (or less) of a location they can go fishing at. Some people go fishing frequently and others may make it an annual tradition at holidays. Either way you will want to make sure that you have these 12 things packed before you leave on your fishing vacation.

Top 12 Things to Take on a Fishing Vacation

  1.  Fishing Poles– It is highly recommended to take at least 2 fishing poles on your trip. That way your entire trip is not ruined if your pole should break. You can easily pick up a back-up rod and reel at your local sports store for approximately $30-$40.
  2. Fishing License – Each state has its own requirements and restrictions for fishing season. Make sure to follow all rules and regulations for fish type, size, and quantity allowed.
  3. Tackle Box – For your moderate fishermen (or women) a 2 tray tackle box will be sufficient. If fishing with multiple style of lures, bait and bobbers, a 4 drawer/rack tackle box would be best for organizing and storing.
  4. Fishing Pole Holder- Many people don’t think about this but it is a great option to free up your hands while fishing. You can enjoy your lunch and still fish at the same time.
  5. Collapsible Chair – If fishing from a dock, shores edge or other stable surface a chair will allow you a break. You are fishing to relax not their for a workout. A collapsible chair is easy to transport and can quickly be folded up when you are done for the day.
  6. Sun Protection- Even when overcast, the sun can ruin a weekend fishing trip in just a few hours. A fishing hat, sunglasses, sun screen, and a shady area are recommended to prevent sun stoke, sunburn or sun poisoning.

  8. Fishing Net – Perfect for capturing “the big one” that might get off your line before you can land him.
  9. Tackle- This aisle at stores can be overwhelming for newcomers to fishing. You will want to have a minimum of 1/2 dozen lures, 2 dozen hooks (#6 or #8 size hooks are my preference), 2 dozen sinkers (medium), and 1/2 dozen bobbers.
  10. Bait – If using live bait, 2-3 dozen minnows or 2 dozen night crawlers. If using power bait, 1-2 containers depending on size.
  11. Measuring Tape– Essential when keeping fish and not releasing them back into the water. A visit from the DNR/Game Warden will quickly put a damper on any vacation. Make sure the fish is the minimum length under the law.
  12. Food and Water – Pack easy foods that can be eaten without much preparation and make sure to stay hydrated.
  13. Fish Preparation Equipment -A fish stringer is recommended to keep fish fresh while continuing to fish. A fish scaler will easily clean the outside of a fish and prepare them for cooking. A Fishing Knife makes filleting the fish simple and easy and is a must have when preparing fresh fish.
