Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia
Tamarack: The Best of West Virginia
If you are looking for a unique gift or souvenir from this beautiful state, go to Tamarack on the WV Turnpike in Raleigh County. You can’t miss the sunburst red roof as you are driving down the road. Once inside the round building you will find hand made items in wood, glass, pottery, metal and fabric, as well as jewelry and a unique food court with cuisine from The Greenbrier. How many travel stops can say that?
There is truly something for everyone at Tamarack. My husband is an avid fisherman, enjoys history, reading, football and his alma mater, West Virginia University. He found unique bronze fly fishing sculptures, historical books on West Virginia and an ice cream stand. 🙂 I gravitate toward fine art, hand-made items, stained glass and jewelry. The first thing that caught my eye was the grouping of Homer Laughlin Fiesta dishes that I collect. They had the color I love and I found a few pieces that you can’t find in the chain stores like Macy’s. We had our ten year old son with us and since there were no Legos in site, he was humoring us at first and being a good sport. However, once he saw a bowl of agate marbles and hand made toys, he was all in. He enjoyed showing me things that he found interesting, which I may have otherwise overlooked. We ended up purchasing a book on the history of Summers County, an agate marble (that he took to school for science class) and some lovely Fiestaware. I honestly could have spent several hours in there, just glancing at all of the remarkable talent that lies within the lush mountains of our state.
A Look Inside Tamarack:
Tamarack also serves as an information area for West Virginia. The friendly people who staff the facility at the information desk are very eager to assist with anything you may need. While we were on our way out, we stopped by and picked up a handful of various brochures on things to do in West Virginia.
Be sure to check out the calendar of events for live performances, films, artist demonstrations and other events that can inform and entertain!
