Kid Approved State Park in West Virginia

There were a few requirements for selecting the best, kid approved State Park in West Virginia. It must have a pool, provide kid-approved dining options and have many activities that are “not boring.”  To an adult planning a day trip or weekend getaway, this sounded like an easy enough task.  However, when options were presented to the pre-teen set, which included learning about state and national history, indigenous flora and fauna and viewing scenic vistas and notable landmarks, noses were snarled.  So, to answer the question, “What can we do that’s FUN?” we did our research and came up with a rubber stamped, kid approved state park in West Virginia.

Our kid approved State Park is(and you’ll see why in a second) Canaan Valley Resort State Park.  Located in Tucker County, in the beautiful mountains of northeastern West Virginia, Canaan has a lot to do both throughout the park and in the surrounding areas.  Sticking to what the park offers, they have a ton of stuff to keep the kids (and adults) more than occupied.  The deciding factor for our kids was simple.  Paintball.  Oh yes, the thought of splattering mom and dad with various colors of paint, shot from a gun, was a hands-down winner.

Among spending an afternoon ducking around while being hunted like wild animals by giggling dwarfs, Canaan also offers an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, golf, a climbing wall, Eurobungy, hiking, biking, geocaching and a scenic chairlift ride.  They also have their own Nature Center where you can take a guided hike and sneak in some of that “boring” flora/fauna stuff.  The resort also has several dining options, some of which are seasonal (they are a ski resort in the winter).  Year-round buffet and plated dining are available in the Main Lodge.

The area is home to many unique attractions, all within a short drive.  Some include Dolly Sods, Seneca Caverns, Smoke Hole Caverns, Blackwater Falls and Seneca Rocks. For more information on all things West Virginia, please visit Information West Virginia.
